Sacred Geometry is a self-portrait in the form of a new media sculpture. The intentions behind this project is to reflect on one’s personal understanding of their own heritage throughout the process of displacement. Hundreds of small laser cut pieces were designed from the breathing pattern of a square in traditional Arabic Sacred Geometry, then fused together piece by piece using epoxy resin in the span of six months. The piece demonstrates a personal perspective of self and connection with heritage throughout the immigration experience. As an extension, the work reminds Joy that heritage is not a thing of the past, but rather; the ways of life and culture are passed on, interpreted and reshaped through new experiences which at times will defy the past norms of our heritage. This project was created as an ode to the crossroads of the North African and Arabic culture that embodies Joy’s identity, regardless of where she is.
Sacred geometry was exhibited as part of Youth, Truth and Imagination exhibition
Curated by Ignazio Colt Nicastro (ICC galleries)
