Femme Nue

is a recreation of Picasso’s painting of an African model in 1907. Unfortunately, The subtle hints which he represented these women with (such as the African masks and curved bodies), had left me very unsatisfied. The model seems distraught, stressed, uncomfortable in her stance with her arms behind her back. My goal was to recreate the painting with a new meaning, to give empowerment to African women across the world. I wanted my model to recreate the same stance but feel powerful, proud and strong. She is portrayed as a goddess. Simultaneously, she is casting a shadow bigger than her. As she holds only one pose the whole film, she represents stability and steadiness; despite the chaotic worlds falling and rebirthing around her.
